Motivation

There's a gap in creator monetization. Ads can work, but you need a ton of views. Sponsorships can work, but they give creative control to the sponsor. Patreon allows fans to directly support the creator, but they get very little in return. And, pay walls are just bad.

Creative Control allows fans to steer the creative output of their favorite creators. Fans vote with their dollars on which project they want to see made. The project with the most backing wins the round and gets made next.

The basic thesis here is that there is uncaptured value in influencing the creative output of content creators. Creative Control turns this into a publicly accessible market that funds the creator's work.

A Better Model

  • Low barrier to entry — This model inherently solves the cold-start problem. If a creator's top project has just $10 pledged to it, anyone can pledge $20 to bring their desired project to the top position. Eventually an equilibrium is reached where the top project has the appropriate amount of funding.
  • Platform agnostic — Creative Control works with any platform. Creators can publish to YouTube, X, Twitch, or any other platform. This system exists as an independent coordination layer.
  • Creator autonomy — While fans are able to influence creative output, the creator sets the available options that fans can pledge to. So, the creator maintains core creative control.
  • Uncapped contributions — If a fan is highly motivated to see some specific project made, they can contribute as much as they want. There is no limit to the amount of money that can be pledged to a project.
  • Transparent incentives — Every pledge is visible. Every decision is driven by what gets the most backing. Fans have real input into the creative output of the creator.

About Me

I'm Jordan McKinney. My background is in Computer Science and Software Engineering, and I make YouTube videos. I built Creative Control to solve a problem. I cover a lot of different topics in my YouTube videos, and I often get requests for more videos on specific topics. I thought there should be a way for fans have a say in what gets made next.

This platform is an experiment and I'm the test subject. Anyone can influence my creative output by pledging money to the video topic they are most interested in. Whichever video topic receives the most funding is the one I will make next.
